Profile

Located in the heart of Germany’s high-technology region, the research University of Stuttgart has a clear focus on engineering and natural sciences. In addition, it offers a fully interdisciplinary profile with key competences in humanities, economics, and social sciences. Present enrolment counts about 25.000 students. Ten independent faculties organize study courses and teaching. The University of Stuttgart takes a leading position among Germany’s universities in raising third party research funds. Present excellence in research addresses emerging fields such as complex systems in communication, large-scale modelling, new materials and sustainable energy, mobility, as well as integrated production design.

The Institute of Materials Science offers teaching and research in modern materials. Hosted in the Faculty of Chemistry, it is primarily oriented to fundamental science rather than application in various engineering fields, although the latter aspects always motivate the fundamental investigations. This orientation is reflected by the three complementing research chairs ‚Material Chemistry‘, ‚Material Physics‘, and ‚General Material Science‘. Current major research areas comprise thermoelectrics, battery materials and electrochemistry, nanostructured materials, bio-materials, atomic and ionic transport and methods of high resolution nanoanalysis. The institute offers a Bachelor program as well as a consecutive International Master program (teaching in English) in Materials Sciences.

Key personnel

Prof. Guido Schmitz

Guido Schmitz is an internationally recognized expert in material physics. His scientific research is dedicated to the exploration of solid-state reactions on the nanoscale from a physical point of view. To this aim, microscopy techniques of the highest resolution are developed and applied. He joined the University of Stuttgart recently to head the Chair of Materials Physics. Prior to that he was Professor of Material Physics at the University of Münster working on atomic and ionic transport in nano-structured materials.

Dr. Frank Berkemeier

Frank Berkemeier is an expert in material physics. His work focuses on experimental research of ionic transport in thin film materials, like amorphous ion conductors or intercalation electrodes. Prior to his academic career he held a permanent position in automotive industry where he was responsible for the development of battery systems in automotive applications.
